ELLEN HARRIET CLAPSADDLE, 1865-1934, America’s Most Collectible Postcard Artist. Born in the town of Columbia, NY, graduate of the Richfield Springs Academy & Cooper Nixon, NY City.
Created the first Snow Bany images and was the first artist to put a smile and red cheeks on the mean looking “Chris Kringle,” thus creating Santa Claus. Ellen created over 4000 images of little children for all of the holidays, from 1875-1918.
She grew up on Prey Hill Road, attended the one-room school on the corner of Prey Hill Road and McKoon Road in South Columbia and is buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, NY.
